I don't cry. I eat...at Secret Garden (Korean Cuisine)

WHERE IS THIS PLACE??

Have you ever had one of those days where everything seems to fall into place and according to plan (and tastebuds)? And it actually takes you by surprise? For example, you crave ice cream and it's blooming hot outside so it's the perfect day for it? Or you feel like a snuggly night in with your lover/couch and it's buckets of rain outside creating that mood for hot cocoa?

Well, this was one of those nights. I have been craving Korean BBQ for a while but it was always too hot for it. Seeing as I live on the Equator now it's pretty hard to find a night where there is a perfect temperature for Korean BBQ (outdoors of all places!). My friend had been telling me about Secret Garden, a cute little Korean restaurant served up al fresco style. A pretty risky business move I must say as most locals I know don't like to dine anywhere without air-conditioning especially where you're eating something heaty and sizzling like Korean BBQ!

It had been raining heavily during the week and I was craving Korean BBQ. I'm usually jinxed when it comes to plans as I haven't been lucky with my plans recently (raining at my outdoor 30th Birthday Party, thunderstorms when I plan a get together at Sunset Bar...). I was expecting a scorching hot night where my make up would end up 1 inch below from where it started by the end of the meal. But no, the skies were with me and my tastebuds that night! It was a rainy night where I could bring our my winter ankle boots and my cardigan which is the perfect outfit for the ice cold cinema where I planned to watch Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter.

So sitting in the al fresco restaurant in such weather was perfect for Korean BBQ. With the breeze blowing away the smoky BBQ smell I was free from smelling like Korean BBQ at the end of the night as well!

I don't cry. I travel...to Singapore! Part I

OH HELLO, SINGAPORE!

I haven't been to Singapore since 1998 so Little S and I had some MAJOR catching up to do. My plan of attack on Singapore was simple: Don't waste time on hawker food because I already live in the land of hawker food mania and strike the cuisines which I have been craving because I haven't been able to get them in KK. Sorry, Singapore, but I think no one rocks hawker food like we do here.

BANANA LEAF APOLO
You probably didn't know that I have a major thing for Indian food. Back when I was living in Sydney I used to crave Indian food especially the winter months and with so little time and not a lot of stomach space (sometimes I wish I had 3), I never got around to blogging about my Indian food adventures. I knew Singapore had a huge Indian community and where there is a big Indian community there must be some awesome Indian food.

My first stop for food was The Banana Leaf Apolo in Little India. It's an institution in Singapore Indian cuisine and as we walked in it was bustling with expats, tourists and locals, downing their Tiger Beers and munching on their naans and curry. As my eyes ran down the menu of dishes my mouth salivated and with so many choices to choose from I need help from the waiter to order (I normally don't!)

A lovely selection of chicken, naan and fish head curry were chosen for us (with a HUGE jug of Tiger Beer, of course!) and every bite was a delight for me. Rich with aroma and taste each dish really tickled my taste buds. My favorites was the ricotta curry (under the vegetable dishes section) and this one is a hit with the patrons I am told!

I'd definitely recommend heading to Banana Leaf Apolo for Indian food if you're ever in Singapore.

AWFULLY CHOCOLATE
Yes!!! I kept my promise to myself to find Awfully Chocolate in Singapore since discovering in Shanghai and boy, oh, boy, it felt like coming home to me when I saw the Awfully Chocolate sign. Not as cosy as the cafe in Shanghai one (maybe because it was freezing when I was Shanghai) the Awfully Chocolate shop was part of a food court. With  delectable desserts that get me all excited I literally squealed when I saw the White Chocolate Butterscotch Block.

Cupcake? Or slice of Cake? Cupcake? Or slice of Cake? We couldn't decide....
So we ordered both :)

You never know...there might be one coming soon to your town!

NATIONAL ORCHID GARDEN

Now, now. Before you judge me and think I should also check out the non-food side of Singapore, I did! I'm a typical girl and LOVE flowers and orchids are one of my favorites. Only $SG5.00 for entry one should definitely at least walk through the National Orchid Garden at least once in their lives.

Serene, beautiful and peaceful this part of Singapore is probably one of the rare quiet parts for tourists to visit. I thought the giant birdcage was awesome (reminded me of something out of Jurassic Park actually!)

The National Orchid Garden is actually part of a bigger park which has a cafe and other beautiful landscapes for sightseeing. I didn't get to walk through the entire thing as I ran out of time but I did find some gorgeous landscaping which felt a bit Alice-In-Wonderland-ish:

With so many photos still to go I think I'll leave it here for now. Like I said, Little S and I had A LOT to catch up on after more than a decade of not seeing each other so stay tuned for Singapore Part II. For now try not to lick screen where the Awfully Chocolate photos are. The time hasn't come where we can eat our desserts through the computer screen...Hopefully that day will come before I leave this world!

Toodles, for now. Lots of baking adventures to share too for next time so stay tuned!!

Peace & Love,
Daphne xoxo
